Matombo Zimbabwean Sculpture Exhibition - July - September 2010 - 1 Jul 2010
Newby Hall has become known as one of Yorkshire's leading art venues, exhibiting wide eclectic and thought provoking art collections which complement Newby's Roman and Greek Statue Gallery. Our annual sculpture park trail shows some of Europe's finest contemporary art, Matombo is Zimbabwean art which is reflective of a completely different style and origin.
Matombo has a passion for Zimbabwe and their fabulously skilled sculptors. They buy directlyfrom the artists and deal with the entire export, import and delivery process. This is important for many reasons, not least that they pay the artists directly and ensure that they receive the full benefit of the purchase. Life is not easy in Zimbabwe and Matombo helps to support a large number of artists and their families.
Matombo's stone sculptures are made of various types of Zimbabwean stone - including serpentine, cobalt, opal, verdite, springstone, fruit serpentine and African jade. Matombo work with many artisits, the more experienced of them tend to work in harder stones and with larger sculptures. The newer artists will often start their apprenticeships working in softer stones creating smaller works, then progressing to larger and harder stones.
The metal sculptures are made from reclaimed oil drums by artists at Birdwoods gallery in Zimbabwe. Renowned as some of the finest metal sculptors in the country they produce a variety of animal sculptures.

Zimbabwean sculptors will be sculpting outside the Grantham Room within the gardens from July - September offering a fabulous opportunity to see the amount of detailed work that each sculpture involves. Children and adults will be invited to work on a piece that will go on display at Newby Hall!
Over 100 pieces are on display from small garden size to large headline pieces. All the pieces are for sale
and are suprisingly affordable!
