Diane Maclean is a sculptor and environmental artist. She has exhibited her work widely in the UK and around the world and many of her sculptures are held in public and private collections.

She works predominantly in stainless steel on a large scale. In fabricating her structures she has worked with with Birch Engineering since 1992. The partnership brings art and engineering together and ensures her imaginative projects are completed to the highest standards of quality and durability.

"As a teenager, I wanted to be an engineer. I became an artist, but much of my sculpture uses engineering techniques and I like the qualities of industrial materials. I frequently work in the landscape, enjoying the challenge of the large scale and the elements, and I often find my ideas spring from this, for work for exhibitions and commissions for buildings. The history of a place can also be a source and the materials themselves influence what I make.

Sound has recently found a place in my work, which has always included light, suspension, reflection, colour and movement. I like working in the public arena, involving people who are not primarily interested in art."
